Gus’s Cafe - Canberra

Gus's Cafe Pumpkin SaladFirst day in Canberra, went for a walk around the ‘city’ area and came across Gus’s Cafe. It was the first place I came across, and seemed to be reasonably well patronised so I thought I’d give it a shot. I’m glad I did. Service was prompt and friendly, seating was comfortable and the food was tasty, I ordered an Ice Coffee and a Roasted Pumpkin and Potato salad (pictured). So all in all a good first impression of Canberra food…

Bamboo Terrace

I have visited Bamboo Terrace on Bulleen Rd about a dozen times over the past 10 years, and I remember 10 years ago it was a flourishing Chinese restaurant with excellent food and beautiful surroundings, with its Asian decor and mini-garden. Then a few years later, maybe the chef changed, because the food quality began to deteriorate, and as expected, so did the business. At one stage I thought it was no more… Continue reading ‘Bamboo Terrace’

Gourmandonline goes bush!

Well.. not quite, but I will be heading off to Canberra soon :) Looking forward to it, I hear there are some very nice eateries there, and even a Krispy Kremes that’s not in the outer suburbs!!

Will post on my food adventures once I settle in and start exploring…

Menya Ramen

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us Menya Ramen is a little Japanese store in the alley leading into Melbourne Central from Swanston St. I’ve been walking past this place for a few months now and it’s almost always been full. I’m a sucker for trying out new food joints so now that I work just round the corner, this place seemed ideal to try for lunch. I had the Menya Ramen (named after the shop so I thought it’d be the safest bet) and May had the Sapporo Ramen.

Lix Gelati

I have long had high regard for Lix Gelati’s chocolate smoothies — think 2 big scoops from a river of super dark and smooth chocolate gelati blended with milk..mmm… — now I have discovered their nutella donuts are just as uniquely enticing. I don’t have a lot of donut experience, but I can tell these ones are extra fluffy and fresh, and with the nutella melting luxuriously in the middle, how can anyone resist?;> My only wish is that they put a bit more nutella in it… Lix is a true hidden gem, a little stall in Melb Central, cnr Swanston and Latrobe, with another branch in Chapel St.

Lord of the Fries

Went to “Lord of the Fries” today, on the corner of Flinders and Elizabeth St. Ordered their meal deal number 1, (Fries + Mini Burger + Drink). Here are my thoughts:

  • Fries were soggy
  • Mini Burger was nice
  • Fries were soggy
  • Belgian dipping sauce (aioli) was excellent
  • Fries were soggy

Team Lunch at Melba

Had team lunch today at Melba, the “newly revamped” buffet/restaurant at Langham Hotel, Melbourne. I gotta say, I’m a little disappointed. I am (or rather was) a big fan of the place in it’s previous incarnation, which featured large chairs and comfortable couches.
